The 2026 Fresher IT Salary Guide: What to Expect and How to Negotiate

Fresher salary confusion is real. Your classmates quote wildly different numbers. Job portals show ranges from ₹2 LPA to ₹18 LPA. Here is the honest breakdown, based on what actually gets offered in 2026.

IT Services Companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra)

  • Base offer (mass recruitment): ₹3.36–4.5 LPA fixed
  • Ninja/Digital roles (after internal test): ₹4.5–6.5 LPA
  • Prime/Specialist tracks: ₹7–9 LPA
  • Reality: most mass recruited freshers start at ₹3.36–3.6 LPA and wait 6–12 months for bench-to-project allocation

Mid-Size IT Companies (Mphasis, Hexaware, L&T Tech, Persistent)

  • Range: ₹4–7 LPA for freshers from tier 2 colleges
  • Faster project allocation — usually 4–8 weeks versus 6+ months at tier 1 IT services
  • Better learning exposure early in career

Product Companies and Startups

  • Funded startups (Series A+): ₹6–12 LPA for strong candidates
  • FAANG/MAANG (Google, Amazon, Microsoft India): ₹20–45 LPA for freshers with strong DSA and system design
  • Mid-size product companies (Zoho, Freshworks, PhonePe, Razorpay): ₹8–18 LPA

By City: Cost of Living Adjusted

  • Bangalore: ₹5–8 LPA feels like ₹3.5–5 LPA in Coimbatore due to rent (₹15,000–25,000/month for 1BHK)
  • Hyderabad: More affordable than Bangalore, ₹4.5–7 LPA is comfortable
  • Chennai: ₹4–7 LPA, manageable cost
  • Coimbatore / Tier 2: IT roles rare but growing, ₹3–5 LPA goes further here

How to Get a Better Offer as a Fresher

  • Clear the internal assessments (InfyTQ, PACE, Xcelerate etc.) to get the premium track offer
  • Have a GitHub portfolio ready — even 1-2 solid projects move you to a higher band at mid-size companies
  • Get an offer from one company and use it as leverage at another — "I have an offer at X for Y, can you match?" works
  • Do not accept verbally before comparing at least 2-3 offers if you have the luxury of time

The Variable Nobody Talks About: Joining Date Negotiation

If you have a better offer coming but need time, ask the first company for a later joining date. Most IT companies will give 30–60 days extension without withdrawing the offer. Use this window to attend more interviews and collect competing offers for negotiation.
